All This Was Inevitable

It Is Also Necessary

The horrors of the current time represent an important lesson, and must be truly horrible for that lesson to sink in.

Ever since this Administration was elected it’s been obvious what they were about. What they were about was a peculiarly American evil. The combined the worst elements of the Indian holocaust, of the Confederacy, of Jim Crow, of McCarthyism, and of the Gilded Age. This is the coalition that came to power last year. What else did you expect from it?

We can’t just beat them back. This crowd must be so thoroughly destroyed that real reform on behalf of true democracy becomes possible, for the first time since 1865. The Constitution must change, and that requires an enormous, coherent, active majority. Our system argues against such a result, in several ways. But that is what is necessary, and that’s what the Administration’s record in office now makes possible.

Every constituency within the governing coalition has now been lied to and humiliated. The winning margin in 2024 came from Latinos and young men. The former are having their families deported, while the latter are seeing their futures destroyed. They’re not coming back.

Evangelical Christians who believed this President a man of peace are seeing not just an apocalyptic war, but one their side will lose, while history continues and no rapture comes. The money going into the collection plate will dwindle as parishioners lose jobs and benefits.

What about Wall Street? The dollar is being destroyed as a global currency, so all that wealth becomes water. Tech Oligarchs have become prisoners of their own making, in gilded cages, while their products are hated by the customers and the employees are ready to revolt.

Was it worth it?

Around the Corner

No one thinks a Democrat can possibly succeed Marjorie Taylor-Greene, but in politics margins matter. Miracles also happen in special elections. For disgruntled Republicans this is a free vote. The race will be refought in just 7 months, and a message can be sent with little consequence. Besides, no one is paying attention, and voters crave attention.

What we have seen, even before the latest war started, is a roughly 20-point swing to the left. It’s happening everywhere, even in Democratic primaries. This is now the baseline. Does anyone believe this Administration will become more popular, as inflation surges and the body bags pile up?

It’s time to think of what may be possible, and who might lead the way. I have no answers for that. All I know is that the pundits and analysts from the 50-50 era should be ignored. Politics is leaving the Internet for church pews, kitchen tables, and individual hearts.

Clues to the future might be found next month in Hungary. The incumbent there would lose in anything like a free election. Will that happen, and what might follow, is the question. Any dictatorship is a mafia family. It’s held together by fear, the conspirators seeing no way out. This leads to Holocausts, and (worse) to people ignoring holocausts.

That’s where we are now. I can’t predict the future, but the recent past makes a different future inevitable. All our assumptions have been destroyed. Just don’t believe you have no role in what comes next.
