Joe Lewis, who calls himself a staff writer for WebProNews, posted a story today claiming that Rice University, my alma mater, is offering a course in Search Engine Optimization.
Unfortunately the bozo neglected to read the catalog before he put fingers to keyboard. The course is being offered, not by the University proper, but by the Glasscock School of Continuing Studies, an adjunct more akin to the Learning Annex. (The listing is what you get by clicking "I Feel Lucky" after entering the teacher’s name at Google.Com.)
When you can check the validity of a claim in two seconds, and you just report a claim as fact, you’re not a reporter. You’re a stenographer.
Hi Dana,
Thanks for pointing this out. The article has been changed to reflect these facts.
I looked at the continuing studies program website and it is designed to look the same as the main Rice University site. Perhaps the University doesn’t feel as strongly as you do regarding this distinction.

There is something funny about the name “Glasscock”. No, not the obvious… It reminds me of “glass houses”, as in James “Glassman” is no longer affiliated with TCS Daily. But that was too small a detail for you to look up yesterday before calling a thoughtful and successful Internet business pioneer (Arnold Kling, no “glass” there) a “notorious shill” for the Carbon lobby. Left blogistan needs stenographers too!
Oh, and this “Learning Annex” course is set smack dab in the middle of your beloved University. Continuing studies programs are how universities do community outreach. They are an important mission for the modern university, helping to balance out the number of stenographers they graduate.
