Open source needs to be a bigger piece of the discussion around Threads, around Twitter, and around the business of technology generally. But 99% of the reports I’ve seen about the new service ignore it.
It doesn’t matter how much money Zuck or Dorsey has. Their reach is limited. The reach of Mastodon, and the open source concept, is not.
In my 45 year reporting career I have seen perpetual change. I have also seen enough booms and bubbles to detect their pattern.
Why are so many people, in all political camps, telling people things are hopeless, that the fascists can win, that our system is doomed? If they have lost faith, let’s find new leaders who have it.
The companies that became heirs to the studios made the previous jumps, to the small screen and then the multi-channel screen. They haven’t made this one. They don’t own clouds. The survivors will be those who can sell out.
No matter how much you may want it, a war between China and the U.S. would be a disaster. If it can be prevented, it should be.
