What follows is a thought experiment, one ripped from today’s headlines.
It’s part of the 1967 game, because I suspect these feelings are common among opponents of the present order, just as I feel they were common among opponents of the disorder from that time.
The same feelings were common in 1931, about the economic system, in 1895, about the political system, and in 1859, about the country as a whole.
It is out of such feelings that political revolutions spring, and new generational theses emerge, aimed not just at halting the current trend but at reversing it, and making it an object lesson for future generations.
If these feelings are in you, that’s a sign. If these feelings antagonize you, that’s a sign as well, because advocates of each failing trend did become more insistent as those trends crested. If these feelings don’t move you at all, perhaps you ought to look again, honestly this time.
Why doesn’t the world get blown up every other Wednesday?
It’s because tyrants are dissuaded. There is the fear of losing, and the knowledge that loss would mean the loss of everything — your family’s lives as well as your own would be forfeit. As would everything you’ve built, and everything your allies have built.
This final solution to tyranny happens in big ways and in small. Hitler was a big way. Charles Taylor was a small. Hussein and Milosevic fit somewhere in the middle. But regardless of how, the final solution to tyranny is always final. Those who espouse such philosophies, who even seem to espouse them, render themselves illegitimate, and become permanent outsiders to society.
The reason Dick Cheney and George W. Bush can even think about attacking Iran is that they don’t think this can happen to them. They don’t believe for a moment it’s possible we could all lose this war. No Democrat can dissuade them. Neither can our allies.
The trouble is they’re wrong.
How can the U.S. lose this war?
- The Army in Iraq is already over-extended, and Gen. Petreus is
moving them into small "forts" that can be over-run by unsophisticated,
albeit experienced, enemies. - The oil fields of Saudi Arabia are highly vulnerable. Most of the
people working there are Shiite, and Iran has already demonstrated they can hit them. - We’ve already got generals ready to quit at the first sign of an attack on Iran.
- There aren’t enough soldiers available to occupy the U.S., even when you throw in all the police and right-wing paramilitaries. The Second Amendment took care of that.
That’s a 1955 map of Middle East petroleum reserves at the right.
So we (or our proxies) attack Iran by air on a pretext, knocking out
their "official" capacity. Iranian agents in Saudi Arabia respond with
attacks on the oilfields. And those in the West respond with attacks on
American interests, including attacks in the U.S.
The amount of anger toward the U.S. is presently at record levels. You
don’t need that many conspirators to blow stuff up. And the U.S.
infrastructure remains highly vulnerable — the Bush-Cheney
Administration has done very little to protect us.
When we’re out of oil, when we’re in Depression, when our conventional
forces are ruined, and when the rest of the world starts handing in
ultimatums, what will the American people do? The first ultimatum will demand that Bush and Cheney be handed over to international authority — that they be tried as war criminals. With the additional threat that our refusal to hand them over will make others complicit.
The Bush-Cheney diehards obviously think we’ll plunk with them, throw over the Constitution and threaten to nuke everyone in the world.
But we won’t. Even if it comes to Civil War within our borders, Americans won’t go down that path to full-blown authoritarianism. Even conservative Americans won’t. Especially conservative Americans.
The only way to stop war right now is to scare this Administration, really scare them, scare them personally, scare them mortally.
Which Republicans among us have the courage to do it? Who can get that message through and make it stick? Because the rest of you become conspirators if all takes place as I’ve described. You don’t really want to make neo-Bushite a mid 21st century term meaning neo-Nazi, do you?
Bravo!

My point is that You are on the same page with her, Dana.If a movement to expell the vermin untermenchen attains critical mass, it will happen right here in the blogosphere! Then, The World!
And by the way, are you familiar with the fact that the initial attack on Iraq included Special teams whose mission was to jack all the museums and archeological research we were so long denied access to, because it is believed that there is still advanced anunaki technology from the cradle of civilisation, (as in the works of Zacharia sitchin) And The NSA and other bodies do not wan’t anything to get into the wrong hands, ei:anyone else but them.
Early in the action there was an Abrams tank that was fired on and left with a pencil sized hole through four inches of steel.I like it when I see a report aired for one, or a few times and then it mysteriously disappears. Those are the ones they fear the most.
And when I vetted my suspicions to a retired reverse engineer who was at Groom Lake, He confirmed it, Identifying the operation by #.I don’t know which of us was more surprised, that I could know with no visible means of support, or that he was willing to admit this plan was executed and the museums were left to be pillaged by looters to cover up a major covert operation that has never been admitted to, unless it came under the heading of “WMD”
